About this dataset

What exactly do the quarterly numbers measure?

This view is built from AMFI's quarterly AAUM disclosure (the aqu files) at scheme-category grain — a dataset distinct from the monthly MCR series.

  • Flows are quarterly sums — gross sales − redemptions accumulated over the three months of each fiscal quarter (Apr–Jun, Jul–Sep, Oct–Dec, Jan–Mar).
  • Average AUM is the quarter's last month only — the disclosed AAUM reflects the final month of the window, not a three-month average of AUM.
  • It complements the monthly views with clean fiscal-quarter windows over a multi-year span (28 quarters: 2019-Q22026-Q1).

Units: ₹ crore. Broad-class buckets are Equity, Debt, Hybrid, Solution, and Passive/Other.

Who Owns the Funds — Investors & Holding Period

AMFI's quarterly age-wise / investor-classification disclosure (Sep-2009 – Mar-2026). Who holds mutual-fund AUM — Banks/FIs, Corporates, FIIs, HNIs, Retail — and for how long. A separate dataset from the AAUM flows above.

Investor Mix (latest quarter)

Who holds the money vs who holds the accounts? AUM concentrates in corporates & HNIs; folios are overwhelmingly retail.

FIIs round to ~0% by design, not missing data: foreign investors access Indian markets directly via the FPI route, not through domestic mutual funds — their MF holding has fallen from ~1.4% of AUM (2015) to ~0.04% today.

About the folio dataset

What exactly does this measure, and what changed across eras?

Built from AMFI's AUM Category / Age-wise Folio quarterly disclosure (quarter-end snapshots). Two tables per quarter: investor classification (AUM + folios by Banks/FIs, Corporates, FIIs, HNI and Retail) and age-wise holding period (AUM by 0-1mo … >24mo).

  • HNI = individuals investing ₹2 lakh and above (AMFI's definition from the quarter ending June 2019).
  • Per-category detail is from Sep-2024 onward; earlier quarters expose only coarse combined buckets, so the category matrix shows the latest granular quarter. Aggregate trends use the full history back to Sep-2009.
  • Average ticket = AUM ÷ folios (₹ lakh, rolled to ₹ Cr when large) — the gulf between a retail account and a corporate one.

Units: ₹ crore unless noted. Quarter-end snapshots; 57 quarters.
